The recent understanding of archives – national archives, in particular – has focussed on their relation to power, to the authorities’ privilege of discourse and self-image. No language, no histories and no archives are neutral. In the tradition of Michel Foucault, thinkers and artists have brought forward a range of narratives that have been silenced, hidden or ignored in the established archives. At the same time, our archives are currently rapidly growing and multiplying. The sheer amount of recorded events is problematic. The National Archives of France, for instance, now stretches over 406.000 running meter. In spite of advanced searching tools, documents are in danger of oblivion and decay. They lose their context and meaning, both as objects and as signs.
The symposium Order and Collapse unfolds between these two poles.

KRIGENS BILLEDER 

– sejr, triumf, nederlag og lidelse i fotografi og film gennem 150 år

2014 er de mange krigsjubilæers år. Vi møder krig i fiktionsfilm og dokumentarfilm, i pressefotos og på kulturhistoriske udstillinger. Ofte møder vi billeder af krig uden at reflektere nærmere over mediets rolle.

Krigens billeder rejser mange spørgsmål

På LFF’s sommerseminar undersøger vi både faste og levende billeder som kildemateriale og visualisering af krig. Vi ser på, hvordan vi som arkivarer og museumsfolk kan bruge krigsbillederne professionelt. Hvilke typer spørgsmål kan vi stille til materialet, og hvor skal vi være på vagt? Hvilke historier fortæller krigens billeder? Hvornår er deres sandhedsværdi problematisk? Hvordan påvirker film og billeders æstetik beskuerens opfattelse af krigen som fænomen?

If everyone with a smartphone can be a citizen photojournalist, who needs professional photojournalism? This rather flippant question cuts to the heart of a set of pressing issues, where an array of impassioned voices may be heard in vigorous debate.

This special issue of Journalism Practice aims to identify and critique a range of factors currently recasting photojournalism’s professional ethos, devoting particular attention to the challenges posed by the rise of citizen journalism. Possible topics to be examined may include:

• Redefining photojournalism in a digital era
• Evolving forms and practices of citizen photojournalism
• Citizen photo-reportage in war, conflict or crisis events
• Influences of social media on photojournalism
• News organisations’ use of crowdsourced imagery
• Audience perceptions of ‘professional’ versus ‘amateur’ news photography
• Ethical issues engendered by citizen witnessing
• Impact of citizen photo news sites, agencies or networks
• Innovation and experimentation in photo-based visual reportage

Prospective authors should submit an abstract of approximately 250 words by email to Stuart Allan (AllanS@cardiff.ac.uk). Following peer-review, a selection of authors will be invited to submit a full paper in accordance with the journal’s ‘Instructions for authors.’ Please note acceptance of the abstract does not guarantee publication, given that all papers will be put though the journal’s peer review process.

International conference IMAGE OPERATIONS

Some images intervene directly in the world and change it infar-reaching ways. As components of media practices, they generateevents, impacting immediately and concretely on people and bodies.Image operations such as these are particularly striking in the caseof war, terrorist attacks, and the political campaigns of NGOs – butalso in medicine. The international conference Image Operations bringstogether leading scholars to discuss the constitutive role of imagesand their ethical implications. The conference is organised byCharlotte Klonk (Art History, Humboldt University) and Jens Eder(Media Studies, University of Mannheim), and carried out incooperation with the Institute for Cultural Inquiry ICI Berlin.

A symposium on early American photography in the Asia Pacific, 1850 – 1950.

July 2 – 4, 2014

The Griffith Centre for Cultural Research (GCCR) at Griffith University, Brisbane, Australia, presents Broken Images: A symposium on early American photography in the Asia Pacific, 1850 – 1950. The symposium brings together leading and emerging scholars from Australasia and North America to investigate the role of photography and photographers in the United States’ historical engagement with the Asia Pacific.

International keynote speakers include Dr Erika Esau (Los Angeles County Museum of Art), Professor Lamont Lindstrom (University of Tulsa, Oklahoma), Dr Max Quanchi (University of the South Pacific, Fiji), Dr Melissa Renn (Harvard Art Museums), and Dr Mark Rice (St John Fisher College, New York). Panel speakers include Gael Newton (National Gallery of Australia) and Dr Jennifer Watts (The Huntington Library and Art Collections, Los Angeles).

The symposium also features a postgraduate forum on the afternoon of July 2, followed by a public panel on ‘Important Collections of American Asia Pacific Photography’, chaired by Dr Kate Evans (Radio National), and an evening reception/book launch.

Two Day Conference with an Exhibition and Performances
2^nd and 3^rd July 2015

People’s History Museum, Manchester, UK

Organised by: University of Chester, University of Salford, UCLAN, Manchester Metropolitan University, People’s History Museum.

This conference aims to bring together scholars from a wide range of disciplines to examine and discuss both contemporary and subsequent accounts, interpretations and uses of the First World War in terms of mass and popular media and entertainments.

We are inviting proposals for papers on any aspect of the Media, Entertainments and Popular Culture during and after the First World War.  Possible themes include,
